Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro. Each light is an RGBICWW LED, which means it does full color and a true white anywhere between 2700K warm and 6500K cool. Most people set a warm white and never touch it again.

The lights are IP67 rated and the control box is IP65, so rain, pollen and a Georgia August are all inside what it is built for. Runs come in 100, 150 and 200 foot lengths. Everything is controlled from the Govee Home app, and it works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Matter if you already have smart home gear.

A Govee kit bought off the shelf comes with clips and adhesive. Stuck straight onto white fascia, a dark clip every foot and a half is the first thing you notice from the street, and it is the reason a lot of DIY permanent lighting looks like Christmas lights nobody took down.

We run the lights inside an aluminum channel color-matched to your trim, fascia or gutter. Matched properly, the track reads as a shadow line under the roof rather than as hardware bolted to the house. That is the whole difference between permanent lighting and a string of lights you left up.

Most of the year this is not holiday lighting at all. A low warm white along the roofline lights the front of the house, the walkway and the driveway, and does the job a set of soffit lights would do — which is the part people do not expect and end up using every night.

Then it is orange in October, red and green in December, and team colors on game day. The schedule lives in the app, so it comes on at dusk and goes off when you tell it to without anyone touching a switch.

Angi puts professional Christmas light installation in Atlanta at $283 to $834 a season, most homeowners paying about $539, and taking them down is often billed on top at $100 to $400. Five seasons of that is roughly $2,700 and you still own nothing.

Doing it yourself is not free either — a box of lights that half works when you open it next year, a trip to the store, a bin in the attic, and a Saturday on a ladder in the cold.

This you pay for once. After that December costs you the electricity.

• How many stories. A two-story front elevation is more work than a ranch, and that is access, not material.
• Roughly how many feet of roofline you want lit. Front only is the common answer. Front and both sides is the other one.
• What color your trim, fascia or gutters are, so we can match the track.

The track goes up under the roof edge, the wiring runs behind it and down out of sight, and the control box sits near an existing exterior outlet. The Govee system runs off a standard outdoor outlet — if there is not one where the box needs to go, you will need an electrician, and we will tell you that at the quote rather than on the day.

Does it hold up in the rain?
The lights are IP67 rated and the control box IP65. Weather is not the failure mode.

Can you see it during the day?
If you look for it, yes. That is the entire reason we color-match the track instead of using the clips in the box.

Do I have to use an app?
To change colors or set a schedule, yes. Day to day, no — you set a schedule once and it runs itself. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Can I still put regular Christmas lights up?
Of course. Most people stop wanting to.

Do you take it down after the holidays?
No. That is the point of it.
